Martin Dufresne, co-founder and design principal at U+A, has had a very busy year. With an impressive list of prestigious projects, an expanded Dubai hub, and new offices in Abu Dhabi and Riyadh, the company experienced rapid regional growth. Dufresne was instrumental in bringing U+A to a world-class multi-disciplinary practice with an incredible portfolio of projects with the region’s top developers during his 16 years at the helm of its distinctive design approach. Emaar, North 25, Aldar, and, most recently, Amaala under PIF in Saudi Arabia entrusted their high-end luxury projects to U+A under Dufresne’s masterful eye for creating distinct residential and hospitality brands.

Dufresne’s global reach stems from his curiosity for cultural diversity and his deep interest in living abroad. He left Canada in 1996 to live in Hong Kong where he worked with HOK on a multitude of high-end projects in Asia Pacific, including China, the Philippines and Taiwan. Following a brief stint in Japan, he relocated to Singapore to work for renowned Australian architect Kerry Hill, where he honed his passion for high-end luxury in both residential and hospitality settings. After moving to Dubai in 2005, he founded U+A in 2007 with his business partner Pedram Rad. Since then, the firm has grown to become one of the most sought-after in the region. Martin and Rad’s vision and ambitious plan for a world-class practice came at an opportune time given the region’s thirst for luxury and quality.

The company’s expansion now accounts for over 200 employees providing a wide range of services such as architecture, interior design, master planning, project management, and, most recently, the addition of a new landscape division under Dufresne’s strong insistence on holistic design.

Dufresne has recently added Academia to his list of responsibilities. Martin’s professional expertise was sought by the Canadian University of Dubai, which invited him to join the School of Architecture and Interior Design Advisory Board. Seeking the advice of his fellow board members in the field gives the School a competitive advantage in improving their curriculum.

Dufresne is deeply committed to developing talent, which has been a guiding principle of the firm since its inception. His 30 years of global experience has given him a distinct approach to his craft, as well as incredible adaptability and sensibility. Dufresne believes the company has a bright future. The previous year’s rapid growth and continued success is a testament not only to his and his partner’s efforts to deliver quality but also to the distinct office culture they instilled and continue to support.
