DLR Group’s Knowledge Economic City wins the WAFX Overall Award!
Knowledge Economic City (KEC), a transformative urban development project in Madinah, Saudi Arabia, received the highly coveted WAFX Overall Award at the World Architecture Festival. The WAFX Prize is awarded to the project that best uses design and architecture to tackle major world issues, including health, climate change, technology, ethics, and values. This award this year celebrates KEC’s pioneering approach in sustainable design, cultural preservation, and innovation, aligning it with global priorities for a better future.
Designed by DLR Group and developed by Knowledge Economic City, KEC is an ambitious mixed-use community aimed at positioning Madinah as a centre of knowledge, culture, and economic growth.
“Knowledge Economic City is a landmark project that honours Madinah’s historical significance while looking boldly to the future,” stated DLR Group Associate and Middle East Masterplanning Director, Shawn Meyers, LEED AP. “Our mission was to design a city that would be both a global destination and a community space, fostering growth and innovation in a way that deeply respects local culture.
Located in the heart of Madinah, KEC spans 6.8 million square meters, offering a vibrant mix of residential, commercial, and hospitality spaces enriched with public parks and cultural landmarks. Designed to be both globally accessible and deeply connected to local traditions, KEC embodies a unique blend of modern infrastructure with Madinah’s historical legacy, creating an enduring environment for both residents and visitors.
