Henrique Dias, Int’l. Assoc. AIA, OA, Principal and Middle East Design Director at DLR Group, discusses the integration of design, innovation, and luxury wellness in shaping the future of hospitality.
In today’s world, luxury wellness is evolving beyond just spa days or five-star massages—it’s a holistic experience that blends well-being, design, and innovation. As hospitality designers, our role is to create spaces that nurture not just the body, but also the mind and spirit. So, what does the future hold for luxury wellness destinations, and how can we design environments that elevate the guest experience?
What is Luxury Wellness?
Luxury wellness means creating spaces where guests can disconnect, recharge, and focus on themselves. No longer an afterthought, wellness now touches every part of the guest experience—from the food they eat to the rooms they sleep in. For designers, this shift means crafting environments that support relaxation and health at every turn.
Nutrition: Elevating Dining Experiences
Gone are the days of bland “spa food.” Today’s luxury wellness resorts focus on fresh, organic, and local ingredients, offering immersive culinary experiences like cooking classes and farm-to-table activities. From a design perspective, this opens up new opportunities—imagine open kitchens where guests can cook with chefs or harvest their own ingredients. This interactive approach connects people with their food in a meaningful way.
Fitness: Merging Wellness and Technology
Fitness is no longer just about a hotel gym. Wellness resorts now feature high-tech fitness centers with smart equipment, allowing guests to maintain their workout routines seamlessly. For designers, this means fitness spaces are becoming as luxurious and thoughtfully designed as any other hotel feature, with a growing trend toward incorporating fitness elements directly into guest rooms.
Mental Wellness: Designing for Peace
With the rise of digital detox, guests are seeking mental wellness in spaces that allow them to truly unwind. Swissotel’s “Vitality Rooms” lead the charge with features like circadian lighting and in-room fitness options. As designers, we’re embracing this trend by creating serene environments that help guests relax, recharge, and reconnect with themselves.
Physical Wellness: Blending Medicine and Hospitality
Luxury wellness is also moving into the medical realm, offering treatments like naturopathy, IV therapy, and sound healing. Designing for these advanced wellness programs means rethinking spa spaces to accommodate both cutting-edge treatments and traditional relaxation methods, ensuring guests receive a full spectrum of care in serene, luxurious surroundings.
Nature & Design: Bringing the Outdoors In
Nature remains a powerful tool in wellness design. Biophilic design, which connects people to nature, plays a key role in creating calming, rejuvenating spaces. From large windows offering stunning views to water features and greenery, integrating nature into the design is essential for enhancing the guest experience.
What’s Next for Luxury Wellness?
The integration of wellness into hospitality is here to stay. From circadian lighting to air purification systems, these elements will soon be standard across the industry. As designers, our challenge is to continue pushing boundaries, and finding innovative ways to support guests’ holistic well-being while staying true to the luxury experience.
