Ahighly successful and well-respected architect, Jason Burnside graduated from the University of Dundee in 1996, and began his career at a small urban design practice in London, spending five years involved in architectural design and urban planning. In 2001, he relocated to Dubai to join Godwin Austen Johnson, where he has since played a pivotal role in shaping the firm’s architectural approach. Over the past 23 years, Jason has gained extensive experience across all phases of project development, from conceptual design to project handover, allowing him to work on commissions that respond to diverse cultural and climatic conditions across both large-scale and small-scale projects. He has worked across various sectors, from residential and hospitality to leisure and mixed-use projects. He has significant expertise in the education sector, having designed circa 20 schools in the region.

With over 23 years of experience, Jason has worked across all stages of project development—from conceptual design to project completion—allowing him to lead projects that thoughtfully respond to diverse cultural and climatic contexts. His portfolio spans various sectors, including residential, hospitality, leisure, and mixed-use developments. Notably, he has developed significant expertise in the education sector, having designed approximately 20 schools across the region.

Throughout his tenure at Godwin Austen Johnson, Jason has led the design and delivery of some of the firm’s most high-profile projects, including Serenia Residences, The WB Hotel in Abu Dhabi, educational projects such as The Jafar Centre at Dubai College, luxury hotels, and an art museum in Saudi Arabia. His commitment to architectural excellence has resulted in multiple awards, including accolades for sustainability and regional project categories. This year, the team will be handing over the Serenia Living Residences, while on the educational front, Jason is overseeing four new school projects, one of which involves the expansion of an existing campus.

Jason integrates the latest technologies into his work, using sustainable materials and innovative techniques to minimise energy consumption. His use of tools, such as BIM, enables better project outcomes and allows for a deeper understanding of project impacts. He states: “Regardless of industry trends, our commitment remains to deliver high-quality buildings whilst embracing sustainability and respecting the local culture and traditions.”

Now in a more strategic role, Jason Burnside remains dedicated to fostering a culture of equality at Godwin Austen Johnson, encouraging collaboration and empowering team members to step into leadership roles.
